  1. (a)Repairs and replacements in kind must comply with either the regulations in this subchapter or those in effect when the vessel was built.
  2. (b)Alterations and modifications, such as re-engining, re-powering, upgrading of the main propulsion control system, or replacing extensive amounts of cabling, must comply with the regulations in this subchapter.
  3. (c)Major conversions, as defined in 46 U.S.C. 2101, such as the addition of a midbody or a change in the service of the vessel, are handled on a case-by-case basis by the Commanding Officer, Marine Safety Center.
